Why cities choose ClimateOS
We asked our customers how ClimateOS makes a difference for their climate action. These are their answers.
"ClimateOS gives us a clear picture of where our emissions come from and the shifts we can make to reduce them. The unique benefit of the technology is that it intelligently links data from numerous activities so we can create a holistic, citywide plan of action."
Mannheim
Dominik Stroh, Climate Policy Project Manager
"We realized that beyond emissions data, what we needed was an evidence base linking real world shifts with emissions reductions. ClimateOS gave us that granularity and more."
Hammersmith & Fulham Council
Jim Cunningham, Climate Policy
"The new economic model will help us tremendously to make the business case for climate action, and to develop our Climate Investment Plan to attract green finance for the most impactful sectors and projects in our city."
Mannheim
Agnes Schönfelder, Spokesperson Local Green Deal and Climate Policy Advisor
“Using ClimateOS has shown us the changes that need to be made within key sectors, such as transport, energy generation, and decarbonisation of our built environment which make up the biggest emissions percentages in the city. This insight will help us focus on actions that will enable us to decarbonise faster.”
Nottingham City Council
Chris Common, Carbon Neutral Policy Manager
"For the first time, everyone gets a clear picture of where we are going, and what exactly is left to tackle. We get to show the impact of our proposed solutions on carbon abatement, which is a great basis for discussion with the industry to see how their planned measures complement the city’s.”
City of Helsingborg
Elin Sundqvist, Climate Strategist
"We need to create a Climate Investment Plan as one of the EU 100 Mission Cities. This is supposed to be a ‘systematic strategy to map out the actions, impact, cost and capital needed to reach climate neutrality by 2030.’ That’s a huge task and ClimateOS makes it possible."
City of Helsingborg
Niklas Bäckström, Financial Controller
"While climate action plans are necessary, they can often be inflexible. We see the main potential for ClimateOS as to be allowing us to evaluate the impact, find what’s working or is not working and adapt our plans accordingly. With the platform, actions can be integrated on a continuous basis, allowing us to keep track of our progress in the coming years and make changes based on new data, new ideas and evaluation of current actions.”
Dortmund
Dirk von Bracht, Climate Protection Manager
"Since we’ve fully integrated our plan with the software, stakeholders are able to interact with it, try out different scenarios and learn how actions, targets and strategies all fit together. It is opening up the way for meaningful participation in the future development of the plan and in ensuring it is a dynamic, working strategy."

You might be wondering...
What does it mean to work with a SaaS platform for your climate planning?
Working with an online platform for your city climate planning is a dynamic process. From the very beginning you are the lead and have full transparency of data, key calculations and how they come together to develop the strategy and execution of your plan. This knowledge sits within your team so you no longer need to rely on experts to update your plans. The outcome is a living Climate Action Plan & Climate Investment Plan.
How much time and resources do we need to use ClimateOS?
The tool is comfortably managed by small, one-person teams as well as larger departments. Creating your climate action plan requires an initial time investment and our team is here to support you throughout your journey. Any time investments are quickly offset by time-savings and efficiency gains along the way.
Can ClimateOS be used as a collaboration tool?
ClimateOS brings together departments like finance, transportation, as well as partners and external stakeholders. It’s a tool that is used for collaborative decision-making city-wide.
Does the ClimateOS model allow me to track actions/projects?
Yes, through ClimateOS you connect your actions to Transition Elements, these are the quantifiable aspects of your actions.
Is it possible to visualize adaptation & resilience measures?
We understand transitioning to net zero is not only about carbon measures. With ClimateOS you can upload your adaptation and resilience measures and these will be shown side-by-side with your emission reduction measures in your public dashboard.
Can we run ClimateOS on our city’s servers?
ClimateView is offered as a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and is accessed through a web browser. This makes it possible for us to create a dynamic approach to climate planning as we are continuously improving the software and models used within.
Do I have a dataset to start planning my transition in ClimateOS?
If your city has an existing emission inventory this is your starting point and we recommend uploading it to the platform. Many of the cities we work with use our pre-populated data to fill the gaps in their existing inventory. The data that we use includes national averages scaled to the size of your city. This data can be customized based on the local data you have available for your city.
Where does the data in ClimateOS come from?
All data points are based on best publicly available resources and you always have visibility of the source. We use estimated values that are aggregates or extrapolations of national data (such as the ones provided by Kraftfahrt Bundesamt, INSEE, INE, NSI, EIA and many more).
What kind of emissions data can I upload into the ClimateOS platform?
Emissions, Energy intensity, Operational and Economic data. For more information, contact us.
How do we get our data into the platform?
The data available in ClimateOS can be updated and customized based on the local data you have available for your city. We also offer additional support packages to help convert and import your cities data.
How is our data protected on ClimateOS?
All data is secured using multiple layers of security and encryption protocols and hosted on Microsoft Azure servers.
Does the ClimateOS platform have an inventory export?
Yes, a one click report that is CDP compliant, and adheres to the GPC format.
How have cities used their public dashboards?
Publishing the dashboard has allowed cities to gain broad stakeholder support for their climate plan, from both the public and private sector. Many cities are using it in conversations with investors. A published ClimateOS plan opens up for transparency, feedback and upholds democratic values. It has yielded positive media attention for cities, has been used in classrooms and in civil society engagement (e.g in collaborations with Fridays for Future).
Is it easy to customize what is seen in the public dashboard?
You can control what you want to share in your public dashboard. The dashboard is populated with your transitions and actions data. The quantitative display is standardized for easy comparisons across jurisdictions and you can change descriptions and labels.
