Meet your new ClimateOS Plan Visualization: accessible, auto-generated, authoritative

Manon Morel Wed, 22 June 2022

With the ClimateOS plan visualization, all city stakeholders can collaborate. Your plan is accessible. Cooperation between city council, sector departments or climate strategists happens in real-time thanks to its auto-generated configuration. Emissions, goals and actions are integrated. Your plan is authoritative.

But there’s more. Now you can bring your city’s climate story to life with the updated ClimateOS visualization: an easy-to-publish, auto-generated public-facing plan.

This updated plan visualization is the result of months of feedback from users in cities across the world. You can share your evidence-based story of change. Set an example for city climate planning done well. Invite everyone to your journey.

Why communication is implementation

Having a robust and detailed climate plan is not enough. It’s time to implement it. But your next best move while starting its implementation is communicating it strategically. The plan you share – that goes beyond emissions reductions and all the way to how this will improve your city's life – allows you to improve, secure funding, and get buy-in.

There are many reasons for sharing your plan publically. As we approach dangerous tipping points, you can show that you are doing more than pledging and that you have actually thought about all the practicalities of delivering on your pledge. Communicating your plan also shows best practices that can be taken on board by other cities and accelerate the transition.

This way, you can also inform citizens and stakeholders, engage in rounds of feedback to find alternative solutions, iterate, fill in potential gaps, and finally, celebrate milestones and maintain momentum.

Benefits of a digital plan

While there are many ways of communicating your plan, going digital has its benefits. For starters, it will save time and resources, and will maximize both your efforts and their reach.

The newly redesigned plan visualization is the result of feedback, input and collaboration from users in cities. Together, we have improved it to include:

  • More space for contextual information

With this newly redesigned plan visualization, you can hold the user by the hand and provide the background knowledge they need to understand your transition. You can also now add color and justify your decisions throughout your plan. Thanks to interactive text boxes, you can explain your overall reasoning under each visualization or action.

  • Visuals that provide the full picture

In the new plan visualization, emissions are put upfront and are interactive. On every level, you can now see the percentage of emissions the respective sector or sub-sector is responsible for, as well as historical emissions. The target that you have set can also be seen, along with the emissions that remain to be tackled and the progress that has been made each year. This transparency provides a great way to build trust and cohesion among city actors to create a stronger climate action plan as it enables you to work with stakeholders and citizens to get feedback and iterate.

  • Actions that are easy to filter

With its new layout, stakeholders can get an overview of all planned actions in just one glance. Actions can also be grouped and filtered according to different criteria and for different visualization purposes. Most importantly, actions that are working towards a certain target are automatically displayed as you explore the plan.

Dynamic visuals create new perspectives. With clear visuals you can give both citizens and decision-makers milestones to celebrate. You now have a strong and credible foundation for your pledge and you can communicate a powerful data-driven story about how to get there.

  • Easy-to-update turn key plan

Communicating your climate progress requires time. Time that could be spent on implementing the climate action plan. While publishing a pdf version of all your intended actions is easy enough, visualizing it makes it come alive and is important for a shared vision. Creating visuals in the traditional way would often require designers. Any update would also include calling upon designers to reflect any change.

The visualization plan in ClimateOS now enables you to communicate better, more openly, and more effectively. Any update is reflected in real-time. In a simple click, you can share an overview of what you as a city are doing on your journey towards net zero – instantly.
